Vitamin C - how much is too much for our system? Without question this seems to be on most people's minds when they are thinking about taking vitamin supplements. It's really only then that there could be a possible overdose. The fact is, you can't really overdose on a daily Vitamin C intake to the point of doing yourself any real harm.
So when it comes to Vitamin C, how much can you really take will always vary according to each persons digestive system. Now what is meant by that is, if you are a person with a very sensitive stomach, then you will probably want to be on the lean side of the recommendation.
1 A Day Vitamins
This is because Vitamin C is Ascorbic Acid, and can cause some people upset stomachs as well as diarrhea, although it's rare, it can happen. It's mainly because large amounts of Vitamin C have been dumped into your digestive system all at once and simply, your stomach can't handle it, if however this is your situation and you have the need to take supplements, then the advice would be to take time release tablets, at least that way it is released into your system over a period of time. Obviously if the upset stomach persists then it is best to seek the advice of a doctor.
Your body doesn't store daily Vitamin C to use at a later date, it needs a fresh dose every day, so if at any time you have taken too much, then your body simply gets rid of it naturally. The recommended daily dose however, for maintenance purposes for an adult, is 1000 to 1500 mg per day, this amount of course, will have to increase if you are sick or run down or have an injury of some kind.
The myth that we only need to take Vitamin C to keep colds away, has probably done more damage to our understanding than good, in actual fact Vitamin C is used by the body for more than three hundred different functions. Now I'm not going to go into all of them now, but when it comes to assisting the healing process of both sickness and injury, Vitamin C plays an important role. It is also responsible for the assistance in the formation of collagen, which helps, for one thing, keep our organs in place, which I think we all agree, is vital.
Vitamin C is also a good antioxidant, this enables the body to maximize the usefulness of Folic Acid and Iron as well as other Vitamins and Minerals. So when it comes to a daily Vitamin C dose, how much is used for each function can't really be measured, but what we do know is, that when we have an injury or sickness and not just a cold, we need plenty of this magnificent Vitamin.
Recommended that the doses for this would increase by at least 2000 mg per day bringing the total for an adult to 3500mg, but certainly if you don't have any of the side effects mentioned earlier then it doesn't hurt to have more, just span it out, morning and evening.
Of course it is only part of a group of Vitamins and Minerals that our body requires daily to maintain good health, so to finish up in regards to daily Vitamin C, How much is too much? there is really no defined limit. It is a matter of whether you are sick or you are needing it just to stay healthy, How much your body can handle large doses of daily Vitamin C. How much we need will always depend upon the state of our health.
